Zolpidem

The research that Neil mentioned is about a drug called “zolpidem”
According to the original report I found, a young man had been in coma for a long time (over 18 months) but at times he was very restless and agitated. His parents asked the doctor if they could give him something to calm him down, to relax him and the doctor used Zolpidem. The result was quite startling, the young man came out of coma.
The problem was, this article was quite old dating back to 2007.
I have now researched into this in detail and have found that a Dr. Nel is using this medication in South Africa and also carrying out trials in Australia.
More importantly, a lot of the research work has been carried out by Professor Ralph Claus at the Royal Surrey Foundation NHS Trust.

I have been in touch with Professor Clauss and he has helpfully provided some information.
In the work he does the drug is given when the patient has been in coma for six months or longer.
So for the short term we carry on doing what we can to help Adam come out of coma, but if this persists there is some hope that there is an alternative.

Here are the links, the first is the original article in “Nature” plus some more recent links.
