Update from Andrew (17/11/12)

Apologies for the delays in posting news. I am putting two messages up today, this one and a little good news.
We have had ongoing battles with LGI to get the care that Adam needs. Initially this involved the move from HDU to a general ward. Adam was not well enough for this move and needed constant attention, and I have previously posted information about this. Some steps were taken to remedy this.
More recently, Adam has been assessed for a rehabilitation unit. Whilst the assessment was taking place, which was daily over two weeks we observed a significant improvement. At the end of this reports had to be completed, panels and committees involved and whole host of delays appeared. During this time he was receiving very little occupational therapy or physio therapy. His progress slowed considerably. In addition, this rehabilitation process could take many weeks and we were scared that any progress made would be lost.
So we have talked LGI and insisted that OT and Physio be increased to meet his needs during this period. After many meetings and emails etc we have now achieved an increased level of care, not perfect but better.
The staff at an operational level are dedicated and caring and doing their best in a dysfunctional system and we admire their perseverance. However the management and organisation is inadequate. As a final straw, just as we were achieving some agreement and getting things organised at an operational level, we received a letter from the complaints department saying they had received the file and were dealing with the complaint and had included a FORM FOR ADAM TO SIGN!.

Are we angry, stressed, frustrated….maybe a little.

  • Martin Gerard Walsh Just goes to show the gap between institutional cackhandedness and individual decency! Ad will sign it in his own time - going to be interesting to see what he has to say!
  • Neil Clappison It really says it all about LGI's level of care eh Andrew, it would be laughable if it wasn't such a serious issue. They have however just given you more ammunition with which to prove your argument.
  • Yvonne Ziegler I dread to think what happens to patients without persistent family and friends. All kudos to Andrew and Adele for tackling this painstaking process. We are right behind you!
  • Robyn Kearns well we know where Adam gets his strength from Andrew!!!... as ever thinking of you all, loads of love x x x x
